MAXIM MAGAZINE'S OFFICE OLYMPICS - COJO
Issue no.52 August 2004 Maxim USA- Anna Kournikova

The August¬Ý2004 Issue of Maxim (here in the states) with Anna Kournikova on the cover and my OFFICE OLYMPICS feature (pg.106-111, coincided with the Summer Olympics- ain't it great how that stuff works out). The idea was to create 14 different Olympic style games you could play in your office with your co-workers. It was fun to take the concepts and flesh them out. The article teaches readers how to stage their own office olympics. Who knows how many serious injuries resulted from reader office idiocy.
14 illustrations- see below:

I originally did this artwork for Art Director Joe Frost of British Maxim some months previous to this printing and it's been reprinted in 16 different languages in over 15 different editions of Maxim around the globe. Finally American Maxim picked it up and ran it with all new copy, and were the only edition that actually commissioned me to do some new additional artwork to expand the feature. Below are a few of the spreads from some of the various international editions. Click the pages to view them at full size.

NBC'S THE OFFICE BITES COJO'S MAXIM UK FEATURE
10-11-05 THIS POST'S CONTENT IS RATED:

One of the cool things you notice when you do a lot of artwork for the largest men's magazine in the world, is that a lot of the humorous writing and ideas presented in Maxim soon get "borrowed" by other sources. Maxim is the king of it's demographic, so other media that appeal to the same demographic tend to be the ones more apt to be borrowers.

It's great fun to hear radio talk jocks make bits and humor material out of features they read in the mag. I have personally sat listening and laughing my ass off as I listened to Opie and Anthony or Preston and Steve taking features I have illustrated for Maxim and turning them into games or taking calls about similar experiences people have had, in relation to the ones I drew.

But, this is different. This is the first time I've seen one of my Maxim features transformed into a half hour of NBC prime time! Last week NBC'S THE OFFICE devoted the entire episode (the office portion of it at least) to their own take on THE OFFICE OLYMPICS. Any of you long time readers will remember the feature I did for MAXIM UK (A magazine I do regular work for) back in 2003-2004 titled OFFICE OLYMPICS.

It was a series of over a dozen illustrated Olympic-like events modified to be played in the average office setting, with detailed descriptions of the events and steps to stage your own version of Office Olympics in your office. The feature was so popular it was reprinted in around 12 different editions of Maxim around the world (Including America) and 10 languages and discussed on many radio shows, webzines, and blogs.

In the episode of THE OFFICE titled "OFFICE OLYMPICS" which ran on October 4th, 2005 the bulk of the cast of THE OFFICE decided to conduct their version of Office Olympics while Michael (the boss, played by Steve Carell) was off buying a condo. I assume without directly saying "we are using an idea we read in Maxim" early in the episode Michael asks his secretary if she has forwarded his magazine subscriptions, in which she replies something to the effect of, "Yes, not to worry, your MAXIM SUBSCRIPTION'S address has been changed."

They played out the games, a few of which they had invented, but some were verbatim from the Maxim feature, including CAFFEINE RUSH which you can see illustrated above.

Thanks NBC. Your show was up until now crappy compared to the UK version. Now I will have to keep tuning in to see if we've helped supply you with any more of your material!
